The Return to Melbourne: A rather tame Saturday night

SAM 4219Flying back to Melbourne felt like flying home........there is something strangely familiar about the city that I cannot put my finger on. Driving from the airport and looking up at the astounding skyline warmed my spirit, perhaps it was because I was a step closer to being home or maybe there is something much more spiritual, perhaps an unexplained connection from my ancestry, who knows.

I get dropped off at the central sky apartments, a rather interesting set of apartments built on top of a car park. I am greeted by a friendly face and quickly checked in for my initial SAM_4211.JPGstay in the central sky. Given the unassuming reception I am delighted by the digs..........a swanky, modern apartment, somewhat lacking the promised view of the city but a great apartment and brilliant location for exploring the city. Good accommodation at a value rate. Once again, I am happy with my surroundings.

SAM 4213Given it was Saturday night I wasted no time. A quick shower and change and I'm out on the town.....ok, out on the town is maybe a slight exaggeration and may suggest a night of extreme drinking and socialising, this is not the case. On this occasion this means solo exploration to soak up the Saturday night atmosphere in Melbourne city.

Heading out again felt good, the weather was super, neither too hot or too cold and I had a spring in my step. As I pounded the streets I sensed a change of atmosphere from the sunny days, it was Saturday night and the rich diversity of the city could not be ignored. From young Melbournians (?) in their 8 inch heels and 6 inch skirts to grubby European backpackers to native old timers, Saturday night in Melbourne welcomed them all, young or old.

Once again I headed to Federation Square, not knowing the city it is a central spot from which to navigate so seemed like a good place to start my evening tour. Fed Square, I'm led to believe

is heaving on a Saturday night and especially so on this particular Saturday. At the time of writing the Australian Tennis Open was in full force and for those not fortunate to get tickets Fed square was the place to be. On a giant screen spectators could enjoy the matches whilst soaking up the atmosphere developed by hundreds of like minded Tennis fans. Not wanting to miss out on the evenings free entertainment I shimmied my way into the centre of it all and squeezed myself between the masses. From there I cooed and ooohed with the rest of the fans as the matches played themselves out.

After an exhausting couple of matches I'm done, not being a huge tennis fan I am tennised out and ready for a beer...........following a beer, some light conversation with some fellow English travellers and a bite to eat I'm ready to hit the sack, tomorrow is Sunday and the weather report is hot, hot, hot.

My week in Melbourne.........
